Kitchen & Coffee, Beacon, NY

Located toward the beginning of the busy stretch of Main Street storefronts, Kitchen & Coffee features an all-vegetarian café with an impressive selection of decadent homemade vegan baked goods. The space itself spans two low-key outdoor seating areas in front and behind the restaurant, and a few indoor tables within the airy, railroad-shaped eatery.

Daily specials on a spring day included vegan tomato chickpea soup and vegan brassica—an Italian veggie sandwich with roasted garlic broccoli rabe, sundried tomato pesto and homemade cashew cheese. The permanent menu includes another vegan cheese sandwich—classic comfort grilled cheese that comes with a side salad with citrus sumac vinaigrette. Keep going back because there’s a lot more to sample—a green smoothie bowl, Vietnamese Banh Mi Bowl and the all-American tempeh Reuben.

Vegan baked goods were the one and only focus of this daytime visit, with an attempt to try as many options as possible. Saving the salad for dinner–gimme dessert for lunch, please. According to the staff, the salted walnut chocolate ship cookie and cheddar scallion corn muffin are the bestselling vegan baked items. Other offerings at the time included a rice crispy treat, marshmallow brownie, chocolate chip brownie, chocolate peanut butter bar, zucchini bread, whopping pie, almond cookie, cranberry walnut oatmeal cookie, lavender shortbread, strawberry raspberry almond oat bar, and banana pecan muffin.

The salted cookie went down quickly—the sweet & salty, chewy & crunchy combo with silky chocolate and chunks of nuts was addictive. The corn muffin was indulgently fluffy, salty and oily—if that’s your thing, you’ll be thrilled and order half a dozen to go.

This blogger can’t wait to go back. A stash of extras are packed away in the freezer to hold me over until next time.
